Restoration Work

With over 25 years of experience in restoring Antique furniture, we carry out a wide range of restoration work. We have listed some of the work we do below, but if you have any queries about any restoration work, then do not hesitate to phone or email.

Tables

This part of our work is very broad but includes, gluing loose joints, restoring unsightly splits to the piece of furniture and repair of any damaged areas. This not only applies to larger pieces of furniture, but other items such as chairs.

Common repairs such as broken drawer sides and bottoms or damaged or sticking runners and stops can be rectified.

As part of the cabinet restoration we can work on:

  • Veneers & marquetry: This may involve relaying bubbling and lifting veneer, and repair and replacement of any damaged or incomplete stringing, banding and inlay.
  • Beading & mouldings: We can replace or repair mouldings and beading with the existing profile of the piece of furniture.
  • Carving & turning: We can make complete copies or repair original carvings and turnings to replace missing sections.
  • Woodworm:We can treat affected areas of the furniture, and also repair and replace the damaged wood.

Paintings

Coffers & DesksĀ

This part of our work is very broad but includes, gluing loose joints, restoring unsightly splits to the piece of furniture and repair of any damaged areas. This not only applies to larger pieces of furniture, but other items such as chairs.

Chairs & Seating

A piece of antique furniture develops its own character over time. This means if it does need to be restored we would aim for minimal intervention. Older pieces would generally have been finished with wax or oil, so a gentle clean and re-wax should be enough to bring back the lustre and depth of colour to the piece of furniture.

Dents, watermarks and scratches can usually be removed by part polishing the small areas of damage, so that they blend in with the original finish. It is unlikely that a complete refinish will be needed, but this will depend on the extent of the problem. If there is serious damage to the piece of furniture, then the surfaces may need to be sanded back or treated so that the bare wood is exposed and they can be completely refinished again.

Boxes & Writing Slopes

We can replace missing brass fittings such as catches, handles, mouldings, castors, knobs, back plates and escutcheons. We have a wide range of original brass in stock.
